Nov 29, 2023 - Courtroom Technology Seminar

The United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and the Atlanta Chapter of the Federal Bar Association are pleased to announce the return of the Courtroom Technology Seminar.

This is a brief session held every few years to assist lawyers and support staff in understanding the technical capabilities of courtrooms in the Northern District of Georgia, as well as best practices for the effective use of technology in trials, hearings, and litigation generally. 1 trial hour of CLE credit is being requested for this program.

The event will be held on November 29, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., in Courtroom 2106 in the Richard B. Russell Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, located at 75 Ted Turner Dr. SW, Atlanta, GA 30303. Attendees are encouraged to arrive by 9:30 to allow time to process through security. 

The cost to register is $25 for Federal Bar Association members and $50 for non-members. For member pricing, membershp status will be confirmed. Most memberships renew in October of each year, so please be sure that you have completed your renewal at www.fedbar.org.

The Atlanta Chapter of the Federal Bar Association invites you to attend its 2023 Luncheon Honoring the Federal Judiciary. This annual tradition is our opportunity to honor our federal judges for the vital they play in our system of justice.

Our keynote speaker this year will be Frank W. Abagnale, author of the book and subject of the movie “Catch Me If You Can.” Mr. Abagnale is one of the world’s most respected authorities on forgery, embezzlement, secure documents, cybercrime, and scams. For over 47 years he has worked with, advised, and consulted with hundreds of financial institutions, corporations, and government agencies around the world. For our program, Mr. Abagnale will be presenting on cybercrime and identity theft.

Jun 21, 2022 - 2022 Luncheon Honoring the Federal Judiciary

The Atlanta Chapter of the Federal Bar Association invites you to attend its 2022 Luncheon Honoring the Federal Judiciary. This annual tradition is our opportunity to honor our federal judges for the vital they play in our system of justice.

 

Our keynote speaker this year will be Lonnie T. Brown, Jr., Dean of the University of Tennessee College of Law and Elvin E. Overton Distinguished Professor of Law. After previously serving at the University of Georgia School of Law as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the A. Gus Cleveland Distinguished Chair of Legal Ethics and Professionalism, Dean Brown was named Dean of the University of Tennessee College of Law. He also is author of the book "Defending the Public's Enemy: The Life and Legacy of Ramsey Clark." For our program, Professor Brown will discuss his book and the life and legacy of Ramsey Clark, the lawyer and activist who once served as U.S. Attorney General before later becoming one of the country's most notable defense lawyers.

May 25, 2022 - The Significant Lawyer: A Conversation with Judge William Duffey

In 2018, Judge Duffey retired from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia after serving for 14 years as a federal judge. Before becoming a judge, he served as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia and worked as a partner at a large Atlanta law firm.

 

Please join us for a special conversation in which Judge Duffey will share insights he learned during his 45-year career as he discusses the topic and his new book “The Significant Lawyer: The Pursuit of Purpose and Professionalism.” 

 

This program is approved for 1 hour of CLE professionalism credit and attendees will receive a certificate of attendance they may submit to the State Bar of Georgia.

Sep 18, 2019 - 2019 Robert S. Vance Luncheon

The Atlanta Chapter of the FBA is pleased to present the 2019 Robert S. Vance Luncheon with keynote speaker Paul Rashkind on the subject of Gideon v. Wainwright: A Multimedia Museum.

 

Mr. Rashkind is Chief of the Appellate Division for the Federal Public Defender, Southern District of Florida, and a Board Certified Criminal Trial Lawyer.  He has co-chaired the Federal Defenders Supreme Court Resource and Assistance Panel, as well as the National Association of Federal Defenders Amicus Curiae Committee. Mr. Rashkind has served as a member of the Adjunct Faculty for the University of Miami School of Law, and has written extensively on the subjects of criminal law, legal ethics, trial and appellate practice. He lectures frequently on behalf of the Federal Judicial Center and the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.

The Atlanta Chapter of the Federal Bar Association is pleased to host the 2019 Annual Luncheon Honoring the Federal Judiciary. The keynote speakers this year are The Honorable Steve C. Jones and Bertis Downs IV. The Honorable Steve C. Jones is a United States District Court Judge for the Northern District of Georgia, appointed by former President Barack Obama in 2011. Bertis Downs IV is an attorney and adjunct professor at the University of Georgia School of Law. His specialty is entertainment law, and he has represented the band R.E.M. throughout their career.

 

The luncheon will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at the Piedmont Driving Club. A members-only reception will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the luncheon will begin at 12:00 p.m. The cost is $65 for FBA members, $90 for non-members, and $650 for a table of 9.

The Atlanta Chapter of the Federal Bar Association invites its members to attend the 2017 Annual Luncheon Honoring the Federal Judiciary. The keynote speaker this year is Stuart E. Eizenstat, the Former Chief White House domestic policy adviser to President Jimmy Carter (1977-1981); U.S. Ambassador to the European Union; Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade; Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business and Agricultural Affairs; and Deputy Secretary of the Treasury in the Clinton Administration (1993-2001).The luncheon will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at the Piedmont Driving Club. Jun 21, 2016 - 2016 Luncheon Honoring the Federal Judiciary

The Atlanta Chapter of the Federal Bar Association invites you to attend its 2016 Annual Luncheon Honoring the Federal Judiciary featuring keynote speaker Benjamin Ginsberg, counsel to the Bush and Romney presidential campaigns.

 

Mr. Ginsberg is a practicing attorney in Washington, D.C. focused on election law.  He has represented numerous political parties, campaigns, candidates, and members of Congress on issues including federal and state campaign finance laws, election administration, and election recounts and contests.  Most notably, Mr. Ginsberg served as national counsel to the Bush and Romney presidential campaigns, and he played a central role in the 2000 Florida recount.  He currently serves as counsel to the Republican Governors Association.

 

The luncheon will be held at the Piedmont Driving Club on June 21.  A members-only reception will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by the main luncheon at noon.  The cost is $45 for FBA members and $65 for non-members.  A table for up to 9 attendees may be purchased for $450.



 

Apr 19, 2016 - 2016 Robert S. Vance Luncheon

The Atlanta Chapter of the Federal Bar Association is pleased to present he 2016 Robert S. Vance Luncheon featuring keynote speaker Mary Beth Tinker. 

 

Ms.Tinker is a free speech and youth rights advocate known for her role in the Supreme Court’s landmark 1969 case Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District, dealing with student protests of the Vietnam War. Today, Ms. Tinker conducts speaking tours across the United States to educate children and youth about their rights, to promote the First Amendment, and to urge young people to become agents of positive change in their schools and communities.

 

The Vance Forum is held annually in Atlanta to honor the legacy of Judge Vance, a distinguished jurist who was assassinated in 1989. All members of the federal judiciary in Atlanta are invited to attend.  The cost for members of the Atlanta Chapter of the FBA is $35.  The cost for non-members is $45.  All registrations must be completed by April 15, 2016, at 5:00 p.m. EST.

The Atlanta Chapter is pleased to offer its next program in its Conversation Series with notable members of our legal community. In this program, the Atlanta Chapter proudly presents special guests the Honorable William C. O’Kelley, Miles Alexander and C.B. Rogers. The Conversation will be moderated by C.B.’s son-in-law, practicing attorney, Halsey G. Knapp, Jr.

 

In the 1950s, these three lawyers began their careers in Atlanta, Georgia.  From diverse beginnings, they established reputations for being, among other things, the elder statesman of the U.S. IP bar, a trial lawyer and member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and a sitting judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. They became and continue to be Atlanta legal icons.

The Atlanta Chapter of the Federal Bar Association is pleased to present this unique CLE program titled "Acting Professionally: A Dramatic Guided Tour to the Perceptions of Law as a Profession as Shown in the Plays of William Shakespeare."  This innovative program analyzes the public perception of lawyers using the plays of William Shakespeare as a lens and starting point. Panelists will lead a discussion of these perceptions based upon the plays, the Model Rules of Professional Conduct, and various professionalism statements and aspirational ideals.

The Atlanta Chapter of the Federal Bar Association is pleased to host its 2014 Luncheon Honoring the Federal Judiciary.  The luncheon will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at 200 Peachtree, which is located at 200 Peachtree Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30303.  It will begin with a members-only reception at 11:30 a.m. followed by the luncheon at noon.


This year’s speaker is The Honorable Alexander M. Sanders, Jr.  Judge Sanders served as Chief Judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals, 19th President of the College of Charleston, and a member of both the South Carolina House of Representatives and the South Carolina Senate.  He has B.S. and LL.B. degrees from the University of South Carolina and an LL.M. degree from the University of Virginia. He has practiced law for more than 50 years, and taught law as a member of the adjunct faculty at USC and the Harvard Law School.  He was a Fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, and Chairman of the Board of the National Judicial College.  He was a Founder and Chairman of the Charleston School of Law.

 
According to Judge Sanders, he has also been a soldier, a soybean farmer and a circus performer. In 2002, he was the Democratic nominee to succeed Strom Thurmond in the United States Senate. Although his campaign was unsuccessful, his principal campaign literature, in the format of a baseball card, was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.  He is a member of the Harvard Club of New York and Sam’s Wholesale Club.

Jun 04, 2014 - A Conversation with the Honorable Robert L. Vining, Jr.

The Atlanta Chapter is pleased to again offer the opportunity to participate in a luncheon conversation with a historic member of our legal community. The Atlanta Chapter is proud to present the next program in its Conversation Series with special guest the Honorable Robert L. Vining, Jr., Senior United States District Judge for the Northern District of Georgia. The Conversation will be moderated by his friend and colleague on the Northern District bench, the Honorable Charles A. Pannell, Jr.

 

Judge Vining’s illustrious legal career spans more than 55 years. His service to the federal judiciary dates to 1979 when President Carter appointed him to serve the Northern District of Georgia. Judge Vining attended the University of Georgia, serving in the Air Force before completing his undergraduate studies and receiving his law degree. In 1959, he began his law practice in Dalton Georgia and was the first Solicitor General of the newly created Conasauga Judicial Circuit. He became a Superior Court Judge in 1969, serving until his appointment to the federal bench.

 

The luncheon will be held on Wednesday, June 4th, from noon until 1:15 p.m. at the Capital City Downtown Club, located at 7 John Portman Boulevard (formerly Harris Street), Atlanta, GA 30303.

The Atlanta Chapter of the Federal Bar Association is pleased to host the 2013 Annual Luncheon Honoring the Federal Judiciary. This annual event honors our federal judges for the vital role they play in our system of justice. This year's speaker is W.J. Michael Cody, who as a young lawyer in Memphis during the critical years of the civil rights movement was a witness to some of the most significant events of the times. His luncheon topic is "King at the Mountain Top: The Representation of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Memphis, April 3-4, 1968." Mr. Cody was one of six lawyers providing legal representation to Dr. King, on the momentous day in Memphis when Dr. King was assassinated while in town to support the striking sanitation workers. The luncheon will be held on June 25, 2013, at the Piedmont Driving Club. There will be a members-only reception at 11:30 a.m., followed by the luncheon from noon to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $45 for members of the FBA and $65 for non-members.
